Edward J. Mastascusa

Edward J. “Ed” Mastascusa, 78, of Lewisburg, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born June 27, 1938 in Pittsburgh, PA, a son of the late Nicola Stephen and Thelma Winifred (Lutz) Mastascusa. On September 3, 1960, he married the former Mary Miller, who survives. Together they celebrated 56 years of marriage.

Ed was a 1956 graduate of St. Basil High School. He would continue his education at Carnegie Mellon University, where he would receive his bachelor, master and doctorate degrees by 1964.

He served honorably in the United States Army.

Ed started his teaching career at the University of Wyoming in 1966. He then came to Bucknell University in 1968, where he taught Electrical Engineering for 41 years until his retirement in 2009.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Lewisburg, where he participated in the choir in his earlier years.  Having a love for singing, Ed was one of the founding members of the West Branch Barbershop Chorus and was active in the Williamsport Community Theatre.

He was an avid gardener, who composted before it was cool.

Ed was a published author. He wrote a Control Systems textbook and co-wrote a book titled “Effective Instruction for STEM Disciplines”, which was published in 2011.

Surviving in addition to his beloved wife are two sons, Edward Mastascusa (Lin), of Harleysville and Martin Mastascusa, of Philadelphia; four daughters, Noreen Mastascusa, of Lewisburg, Diana Mastascusa (John Haddad), of Broomfield, CO, Maria Law (Eric), of Collegeville and Joan Thomas (Melvin), of Trexlertown; brother, James Mastascusa (Brenda), of Waukesha, WI; sister, Joanne Moser, of Naples, FL; and 11 grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cronrath­-Grenoble Funeral Home, 106 S. Second St., Lewisburg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church, 41 S. Eighth St., Lewisburg, with his pastor, the Rev. Msgr. William Richardson, officiating.

Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family in the Lewisburg Cemetery columbarium.
