Richard E. "Dick" Campbell

Richard E. “Dick” Campbell, 86, of Milton, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

He was born November 23, 1930 in Milton, a son of the late Eugene and Marian (Tate) Campbell. On November 4, 1950 he married the former Barbara Kieser, who survives. Together they celebrated 66 years of marriage.

Dick was a 1948 graduate of Milton High School. By the end of World War II Dick had enlisted in the National Guard and in 1950 at the onset of the Korean War his National Guard Unit along with other PA. NG units were mustered into Army service with the 28th Division and sent to Camp Atterbury, Indiana for training. 

He retired from the former Continental Can Company, Milton, where he worked as a quality control inspector for 31 years. Dick previously worked as an inspector at ACF, Milton.

Dick was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Milton. He was also a member of the Milton American Legion Post 71 and was a lifetime member of the Keystoners Drum and Bugle Corp, where he was known as “Sheener.” He played first soprano bugle and the corps captured first place at the State contest in Pittsburgh, becoming the Class B champions. 

An avid fan of football, he enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially the Steelers and Penn State. Dick was fond of hunting and vacationing at the beach in New Jersey, where he also enjoyed visiting the casinos. He loved playing cards and along with his wife, was a member of a card club for 35 years. Dick was very resourceful and was always fixing things around the house. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their theater shows and sporting events. Dick also loved the company of his dog, Willy.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son and daughter-in-law, Richard H. “Rick” and Carolyn Campbell, of Chambersburg; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Nancy and John Heimbach, of Lairdsville, Jeanne and Scott Leitzel, of Mifflinburg and Peggy Campbell, of Sacramento, Cal.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet and Dale Ranck, of Milton and Pat and John Pfleegor, of New Columbia; four grandchildren, Matthew Weaver, Lindsay Campbell, Christie Wilmot, and her husband, Shua and Sean Leitzel; and two great-grandchildren, Vanessa Leitzel and Audree Swavely.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Polly Campbell.

Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main St., Watsontown, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. with Rev. Alice Rauch, pastor of the first United Church of Christ, Middleburg, officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow in the Milton Cemetery.
