Richard J. “Dick” Sterry, 89, of Lewisburg, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017 at his home.
He was born April 25, 1928 in Warren, a son of the late Russell D. and Velma L. (Morse) Sterry. On January 20, 1952, he married the former Lois E. Pauling, who survives. Together they celebrated 65 years of marriage.
Dick was a 1947 graduate of Lewisburg High School, where he played basketball and football. He served honorably in the United States Army for three years where he served as military police in Guam.
Earlier in life, he worked for the former Philco, Watsontown and the federal penitentiary in Chillicothe, Ohio. Dick retired from the former Pennsylvania House after 42 years in March of 1991 and served as treasurer for the AFL/CIO local 192 for 35 years.
Dick worked the first down marker at Bucknell and Lewisburg football games from 1950 to 2010 and kept the score book for the Lewisburg boy’s basketball teams from 1977 to 2015. He also coached Little League and served as an umpire for 30 years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, John R. Sterry, of Lewisburg and David E. Sterry, of Collegeville; one daughter, Ruth E. Wertz, of Lewisburg; one brother, Ronald Sterry, of NJ; and four grandchildren, Daniel, Nathan, Richie and Kathy
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Robert Sterry.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 106 S. Second St., Lewisburg, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. with Pastor Les Clemens, officiating.
Burial will follow in Lewisburg Cemetery.
