John W. "Zip" Hafer

John W. “Zip” Hafer, 80, of New Berlin, entered into rest at 9:32 a.m., Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Rolling Hills Manor, Millmont.

He was born August 9, 1938 in Lewisburg, a son of the late Arthur J. Sr. and Margaret T. (Hughes) Hafer.  He and his wife, the former Marilyn (Stetter) Marra, were married October 5, 1974. Together they celebrated 44 years of marriage.

John was a graduate of Lewisburg High School. He was a veteran of the Air Force, serving four years. In his early years, John worked at JPM and for Interstate Trucking Company. In 2001 he retired from the Mifflinburg School District, after 20 years.

John was a lifetime member of the New Berlin American Legion Post 957, where he served as past commander and president.

He was a true fan of Notre Dame Football. A loving husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa, John’s greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a step son, William Marra, of Mifflinburg; three step grandchildren, Anthony Marra, Brandon Marra and his fiancé, Lindsay and Carly Marra; one step great-grandson, Abraham Marra; one brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Stella Hafer, of Danville; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Hafer, of Lewisburg.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Arthur, Frank and Donald Hafer and three sisters, Mary Rose Bailey, Margaret Leisenring and Leona Beck.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, S. Second and St. Lewis streets, Lewisburg, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Ricky Phillips, officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow in the Lewisburg Cemetery.
