Kathryn Tyson Obituary

Kathryn Millward Tyson of Lewisburg passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2019. We are saddened by the loss of this very special woman, but joyful and thankful for the long and exuberant life she enjoyed and shared with others.

Kathryn was the younger daughter of Carl Lyon Millward and Mary Louise Kreisher.  Born in Milton on June 12, 1921, she graduated from Milton high school and entered Bucknell University as a political science major; pursuing a subject she never tired of.

Kathryn was a member of Pi Phi sorority. At Bucknell, she met and married James Arthur Tyson, Jr., a 1941 graduate. They raised their two sons, James Arthur Tyson III and Thomas Lyon Tyson in Loyalsock Township, Montoursville. In 1966 Kathryn moved with her husband to Newbern, Tennessee where they lived until his death in 1980.

Kathryn then moved back to her family roots in Lewisburg. She bought her home on South 4th street with its large front porch and blue door, where she lived and entertained for more than 38 years.  Known variously as Kate, Kay and Mama K, she was an avid bridge player, golfer, gardener, painter and seamstress.  She was a voracious reader and had knowledgeable and passionate opinions on almost all subjects of the day.  These she delivered in her fabulously color-coordinated outfits for which she will long be remembered. Kate loved to travel and to meet people; invoking in her a sparkling smile, natural curiosity and gregarious personality. She was an engaging guest at any dinner party, encouraging lively conversation and inspiring many a wonderful anecdote.

Kate was an attentive listener who had a genuine interest in others, creating a friendly bond with whomever she met.

Her son, Jim Tyson passed away on January 4, 2014. He and his wife Joan Legge Tyson gave Kate grandchildren, Todd, Brad and Shannon and great grandchildren, Alex, Megan and John.

Son, Thom Tyson gave Kate a grandson, Michael James Lyon Tyson.

Kate’s family includes her nieces & nephews, Wendy Nolin, Linda Zepp, John Weightman and Lizzie Manning, all children of her sister, Dorothy Millward and Dr. Joe Weightman. Her brother, William Millward’s family included Joan, Bill, Bob, Donna, Richard, Carl, Joelen, Daphne, Jane and Debbie.

Kathryn’s ashes will rest in peace at the family plot in Lewisburg and will lovingly be scattered to her favorite places around the world.
