Marlin L. Hartman

Marlin L. Hartman, 95, of Lewisburg, entered into rest, October 16, 2017 at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

Mr. Hartman was born September 2, 1922 in Kelly Crossroads, Union County the eldest son of the late Melvin C. and Lanna (Fritz) Hartman.  October 1950, he married the former Edna Mae Engleman and together they celebrated 44 years of marriage before her death on September 4, 1994.

Mr. Hartman graduated from Milton Service High School in 1940. He later received a Bachelor of Science degree from Lycoming College and a Master of Science degree from Penn State University. Mr. Hartman completed all course work for a Doctoral Degree at Penn State University minus his dissertation.

He served honorably in the United States Army, European Theater of Operations, during WWII, earning himself a purple heart, and two bronze stars as a Private First Class.  Private Hartman carried a mortar through 5 major battles:  Normandy, Brittany, Roer to Rhine, Elbe River, and Ardennes Forest (The Battle of the Bulge). 

Following his time in the service, he returned to civilian life by being employed by the Lewisburg Auto Supply as an automobile mechanic.  After serving a partial apprenticeship, he was employed by the Milton High School to teach auto mechanics. Mr. Hartman then moved to York, PA to teach auto mechanics in the York City School system. He was then elected director of vocational trade and industrial Education for the Lewistown School District, and was later the director of Vocational Education for the Juniata/Mifflin County Area Vocational School. Mr. Hartman then became Supervisor of Vocational Technical Education for the Jefferson County/ DuBois Area Vocational School, and then became Supervisor of Vocational Education for the George Junior Republic, located at Grove City. He later retired from public school education after 29 years of service. After retiring, he was employed as manager for the Kelly Township Municipal Authority for 11 years. Mr. Hartman permanently retired due to ill health.

Mr. Hartman was a member of the Shamokin Dam United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the Milton F&AM Lodge, 256. 

Mr. Hartman was an avid reader keeping up to date with his passion for auto mechanics.

Earlier in life he loved to travel. Later in life he became very interested in the Culinary Arts and might have considered becoming a Chef. 

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Steven L. and Eileen A. Hartman, of  Newbury Park, CA; one brother, Lake L. Hartman, of  Milton PA; three grandchildren, Kristin, Steven Jr., Tara,  one great-granddaughter Scarlett Alexander, and his beloved nurse and caregiver of 22 years and 10 months, Cathy M. Long.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Leah Hartman Flock.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 26, at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 27, with the Rev. Michael Hoskins Sr., officiating.

The family will provide the flowers, however, if desired, memorial contributions in Marlin's name may be made to the Evangelical Community Hospital, 1 Hospital Drive Lewisburg, PA 17837.
