W. Dean Metzger Obituary

W. Dean Metzger, 88, a longtime resident of Winfield, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2019 at The Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove.

He was born July 1, 1930 in Penn Twp., Snyder County, a son of the late Filbert C. “King” and Anna F. (Fisher) Metzger.  On November 25, 1948 he married the former Shirley B. Warntz and together they celebrated nearly 56 years of marriage before her passing on October 19, 2004.

Dean attended a one room school house until 9th grade and went on to graduate from Lewisburg High School in 1948.

Butchering being his passion in life, Dean worked for Maynard and Mark Reitz for 20 years. During this time, he also attended the Williamsport Growers Market selling meats for 23 years. Dean would later buy the former Bob Hess and Son Butcher Shop, Winfield and run Metzger Meats for 22 years before retiring in 1995.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Winfield since 1948.

Dean was also a member of Charity Lodge # 144 F&AM,  Lewisburg, the Williamsport Consistory, Union Township Fire Company and the New Berlin Fire Company.

Having a love for the outdoors and hunting, he was a life member of the Northumberland Point Township Sportsman Association, a member of the Sand Run Hunting Lodge, Mid-Penn Sportsman Association, Keystone Sportsman Club and Tom Mix Riding Club. Dean loved to hunt in McKean County with his family. He was also an avid trap shooter and was the Pennsylvania State shoot handicap champion in 1968.

Dean enjoyed snowmobiling and horseback riding, having owned a horse for most of his life.

Surviving are three sons, Rodney Metzger and Brenda Wagner, of Winfield, Ronald and Lori Metzger, of Watsontown and Randall Metzger, of New Columbia; one daughter, Rhonda and Gary Boyer, of Mifflinburg; nine grandchildren, Kristin Lahr, Kayla Metzger, Dirk Metzger, Dana Metzger, Anna Trayer, Loran Metzger, Miranda Metzger, Faith Brininger and Kip Boyer; three step grandchildren, Niki Rife, Ian and Mia Boyle; 16 great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, S. Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 24 State Route 304, Winfield, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Matthew Loyer, officiating.

 Burial will follow in the Winfield Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions in Dean’s name be made the Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 159 Winfield, PA 17889.
