Harry E. Ammon, Sr.

Harry E. Ammon, Sr., 86, a longtime resident of Lewisburg, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016 at his son-in-law’s home in Mifflinburg.

He was born April 14, 1929 in Lewisburg, a son of the late Ralph I. Sr and Grace E. (Berger) Ammon.  He and his wife, the former Irene Mae Klingler, were married September 20, 1952. Together they celebrated 60 years of marriage before her death December 22, 2012.

Harry was a 1946 graduate of Lewisburg High School and served honorably as a sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He retired in 1991 as a chemical operator from Merck & Co., Danville.

He was a lifetime member of Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisburg where he previously served on church council and participated in the men’s chorus and parish choir.

Harry devoted much of his life to community service. He was a lifetime member of the William Cameron Engine Company, where he served as a fire fighter, pump operator, ambulance driver, EMT and first aid instructor.  He was also an active blood donor for the American Red Cross since 1956, a Red Cross instructor trainer, and served on the board of directors for Blood Services of Northeastern PA Region American Red Cross, earning the Clara Barton Award for outstanding volunteer leadership in 1985.

He was a member Boy Scout Troop 509, and served as a committee member, assistant scout master, and merit badge counselor.  Harry received the District Award of Merit in 1969, the Vigil Honor - Order of the Arrow in 1970, and the Lamb Award from the Lutheran Church in America for Service to Youth in 1974.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Lodge #96, the East Buffalo Township Emergency Management Agency and the Kratzer-Dull American Legion Post #182.  Harry volunteered as both a music and athletic booster member while his children were in the Lewisburg school system, served on the reunion committee for the class of 1946 and earned the distinguished alumni award in 1999.

He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his free time.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Harry E. Jr. and Sherelyn Ammon, of Reading; one daughter and son-in-law, Wendy L. and David Testa, of Purcellville, VA; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Penny Ammon, of Billings, NY; one sister, Betty Phillips, of Clarks Summit; one son-in-law, William Hauck, of Mifflinburg; one sister-in-law, Edna Ammon, of Mifflinburg; seven grandchildren, Keith, Kevin and Kyle Hauck, Kaitlin and Hillary Ammon and Benjamin and Daniel Testa; and three great-grandchildren, Violet Irene, Madeline and Julia Hauck.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by one son, William Harry Ammon; two daughters, Barbara Hauck and Nancy Ammon; one brother, Ralph Ammon, Jr.; and one sister, Louise Martin.

Friends will be received from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, at Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 S. Third St., Lewisburg, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. William S. Henderson, officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow in the Lewisburg Cemetery.
