I just found about his passing in the Bucknell magazine. Professor Payne was the finest teacher I have ever had the pleasure of learning from, a wonderful person to talk to outside of the classroom, and just an all-around exceptional guy. Although I graduated in 1985 and did not keep in touch, to this day if discussion of school comes up, Michael Payne's name is mentioned as my favorite. Out of the 9 English classes I took for that major, 4 of them were with Professor Payne, I was so lucky. I'm sure you know what an exceptional person he was, just wanted to tell you that there are many others out there I'm sure who still think the same of him.

I am both saddened and impressed by the reading of Mr. Mike's obituary. I was one of his caregivers, and enjoyed conversations with him about books and art. Somehow he never mentioned being an educator, let alone how accomplished he was in his field, though I am not surprised.

The last time I saw him we conversed longer than usual. He showed me a centuries old Bible he possessed, and discussed how fascinated he was by the notes and markings written in the margins by its original owner, a woman. Mr. Mike was excited by a small stain on one of the thin parchment sheets. He said he liked to wonder about what duty the reader had been performing in order to transfer the ancient smudge. Of course, he had his suspicions.

I am glad I chose to not focus on work tasks and timing that night. Had I done so I would have not only missed out on a great exchange, but an even greater memory that will likely stay with me for years to come. My condolences to all who loved him.

To the children of Mike, I send a fond remembrance. Your Dad and I sang together in the choir at Christ Lutheran Church for a period of time and enjoyed each others company. Joined by yet another bass, Wilmer Leimbach, we occasionally got together and lifted a few glasses of wine! At some point, your Dad met with our minister at the time about an issue within the church and when he felt like he wasn't being listened to he made the decision to switch to the Episcopal church. Since his departure, shame on;both of us, but we failed to continue to see each other. Your Dad was a GOOD man whom I will always remember and I share with you in your loss. May the God of all mankind give you peace.

My freshman year at Bucknell in 1974 is when I met Prof. Payne. I had entered as an English major intent on becoming a high school English teacher. While I thrived in the intellectually stimulating course I took with Dr. Payne, by second semester my performance in various other courses placed my college career in jeopardy.
I had to take two summer courses, and I enrolled in Prof. Payne's graduate-level course on Edmund Spenser. He was certain that I could handle the demands of the class. His confidence in me changed the trajectory of my academic and pedagogical life.
I am forever indebted to him for his inspiration, intellect and interest in my career.
One day (and a few years) separated our dates of birth. On occasions we discussed the sheer serendipity of that proximity. It is as if our paths were meant to cross. I am most grateful for that.
Rest and read in peace!
