Jack Wheatcroft was my professor of English and of World Literature at Bucknell University in 1956 and 1957, where he and Mildred Martin were my greatest inspirations. Jack and I had a rather intense correspondence in the past several years, after I reviewed his collected poems, The Fugitive Self, for Poets' Quarterly. Then my letters began to be returned unopened, and I realized that a great light had been extinguished.

I am heartbroken at the news of Jack's death. The world is a colder and smaller place without him in it, but I am grateful for the chance to have basked in his warm, inspiring light.
